Tata Motors is buying Jaguar and Land Rover--notable because the Indian company's current claim to fame has been producing a $2,500 car for the Indian market. Now the company will lay claim to two of the world's most luxurious brands, with prices to match.
Tata Motors is India's largest automobile company, established in 1945, producing the first vehicle in 1954. Tata is the first company from India's engineering sector to be listed in the New York Stock Exchange and has emerged as an international automobile company. In 2004, it acquired the Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company, Korea's second largest truck maker. There are also links with a Spanish commercial vehicle company and an agreement with Fiat to produce a pickup truck bearing the Fiat nameplate in Argentina. All will extend the company's international footprint.
No announcemen have been made about the marketing of Jaguar and Land Rover in the United States. Stay tuned on this one.
