Wal-Mart said Thursday it is converting more than 1,7000 garden centers to areas for football merchandise, decor and grocery items aimed at tailgaters and sports enthusiasts.
The football centers will be in stores this week through Sept. 30, Wal-Mart said in a release.
"With 36 million tailgaters in the U.S., the kickoff to football season is now one of our favorite all-American pastimes," Janet Bareis, vice president of Wal-Mart corporate marketing, said in a release.
The company cited data from tailgating.com, which said that 42 percent of tailgaters spend more than $500 each on food and supplies each football season.
