Buy a Chrysler, Pay $2.99 for Gas for 3 Years/Expires 6/2/08

Chrysler LLC is offering customers guaranteed gas prices below $3 a gallon for three years. Called "Let's Refuel America," the incentive plan allows buyers of most Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles to sign up for a gas card that will reduce the price they pay to $2.99 a gallon at the pump.

The promotion is national and covers most Chrysler nameplates. Expiration is currently set for June 2, 2008.

Chrysler is struggling to stimulate demand for its vehicles. Of the three Detroit automakers, it is the most dependent on sales of large vehicles, and it has suffered the biggest sales decline this year. In the first four months of 2008, Chrysler car and truck sales have fallen 17.6 percent, more than twice the overall market's decline, according to Autodata Corp.

Chrysler's new program begins Wednesday and covers leases, as well as purchases. It is available at 3,521 Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealerships across the country through June 2. It provides an annual allotment based on the vehicle's mileage and 12,000 miles' driving for each of the three years.

It applies to most vehicles except the Dodge Ram Chassis Cab, the Sprinter van, high-performance SRT models, the Viper, the Crossfire, the fast-selling Jeep Wrangler and the new Challenger.

"We're paying $3.99 out here today," said Jim Hossack of AutoPacific Inc., a Tustin, Calif., consulting firm. "You'd expect to save roughly $1,000 per year if you've got a 12-mile-per-gallon vehicle."

Customers who are not interested in the plan can opt for traditional incentives. For instance, on the Dodge Ram pickup, customers have a choice between a $5,500 rebate or the gas plan plus a $3,000 cash bonus.

Sales of Chrysler's new minivans, key vehicles for the automaker, have been hurt by a shift toward smaller cars. Chrysler lost $1.6 billion in '07 and expects to lose money this year before returning to profit in 2009.

Chrysler executives noted the automaker has more fuel-efficient vehicles in the pipeline. This fall, it will launch two hybrid sport utility vehicles, the Dodge Durango Hybrid and Chrysler Aspen Hybrid that the company says increase fuel economy by more than 25 percent overall and 40 percent in the city. In 2010, a Dodge Ram Hybrid will reach the market.
